Title: Low-Power Wide-Area Networks: The State of the Art and Challenges in the Future

Time: 13:00-13:30, Thursday, 10 August

Abstract: In the 5G/B5G era, the concepts and implications of mobile Internet have been elevated to a new level, with the world's demand for the Internet of Things (IoT) far exceeding that for public mobile communications. This talk will discuss the irreplaceability of low-power wide-area networks (LPWAN) as a unique connecting technology for IoT in the age of mobile communication system reform led by 5G, as well as the challenges it faces in adapting to future evolution from an industry perspective.

Bio: Wenkun Wen received his Ph.D. in Telecommunications and Information Systems from Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, China, in 2007. Since 2020, he has been with Techphant Technologies Guangzhou Ltd. Co. as Chief Engineer. From 2008 to 2009, he was with the Guangdong-Nortel R&D center in Guangzhou, China, where he worked as a system engineer for 4G systems. From 2009 to 2012, he was with the New Postcom Equipment Co., Ltd., LTE R&D center in Guangzhou, China, where he worked as the 4G standard team manager. From 2012 to 2018, he was with the 7th Institute of China Electronic Technology Corporation (CETC) as an expert in wireless communications. From 2018 to 2020, he was the Deputy Director of the 5G Innovation Center of China Electronic Technology Corporation (CETC). His research interests include 5G/B5G mobile communications, machine-type communications (MTC), narrow-band wireless communications, and signal processing.
